Structures I
with artist Omeima Mudawi-Rowlings
“….A lot of music is intrinsically mathematical..”
Brighton-based textile Deaf artist, Omeima Mudawi-Rowlings, was chosen to represent Ruth’s vision of ‘structure’.
A lot of music is intrinsically mathematical. It consists of patterns of symmetry and asymmetry, ratios of time units and pitches, and complex interactions of frequency spectra which is matched in style by Omeima’s work; heavily featuring repeating patterns and motifs.
For the project, Ruth chose Mozart’s ‘Allegro in D Major for flute and string quartet (Opus KV285)’ and asked Omeima to translate her vision into textile.
Omeima is incredibly skilled with fabric and Ruth was delighted by the final piece. Throughout the process, and under Ruth’s tutorage, Omeima learned to read sheet music and gained a deeper knowledge, and appreciation, of music which now features in her designs.
The diagrams and pictures explain the basis of the project, as well as the final work.
